Qi Xi Jie - The Night of Sevens

Qi Xi Jie - The Night of Sevens

Today is Qi Xi Jie - also knows at the magpie festival. This is being celebrated every seventh month of the seventh day in the lunar festival. Ancient beliefs told that on this day, the two forlorn lovers, Niu Lang, the cowherd and Zhi Nu, the weaver girl. I first heard of their story from Ariel Lin and Ocean Ou De Yang's song, Gu Dan Bei Ban Qiu or "Lonely Northern Hemisphere" Here's Ariel Lin's MV of that song (which is the OST from her drama "Love Contract"). Coincidentally, her drama, "Love Contract", which also stars Mike He, is almost similar to Zhi Nu and Niu Lang's story. Please don't ask me what the story is, as I haven't watched it yet hehehe

And here's the translation of the lyrics

I use your “Good Morning” to accompany me during dinner time
Remember to deposit the yearnings into the piggy bank
I’m staring towards the sky of shining stars
I’m listening to cowherd telling the weaver girl to be brave

I’m not afraid that we’re both in opposing part of the earth
I’m watching your greetings and riding the magic carpet
Flying; you fly towards me with the speed of the light
You let me see that the Northern Star is accompanied by the Southern Cross

Lack of your arms as my pillows; I’m still not used to it
Your telescope cannot see; my loneliness here in the Northern Hemisphere
The tides of the Pacific Ocean are following the Earth circling back and forth
I will patiently wait until the day that you come ashore

Lack of your hugs as my heater; I’m still not used to it
The photos that I emailed to you didn’t show my loneliness here at Northern Hemisphere
It doesn’t matter how huge the world is, two true hearts will keep each other warm
I won’t be lazy at missing you
I’ll let you keep all of my dreams

As tradition, young single girls demontrate their domestic skills, especially in embroidering.

On Qi Xi, a festoon is placed in the yard and the single or newly married women in the household make an offering to Niulang and Zhinü consisting of fruit, flowers, tea, and facial powder (makeup). After finishing the offering, half of the facial powder is thrown on the roof and the other half divided among the young women. It is believed by doing this the women are bound in beauty with Zhinü.

Another tradition is for young girls to throw a sewing needle into a bowl full of water on the night of Qi Xi as a test of embroidery skills. If the needle floats on top of the water instead of sinking, it is believed to be an indication of the girl's being a skilled embroideress.

And yes, young girls can wish for a good husband. Hmmm... since I am young and single, maybe I can wish for a good husband myself, LOL!

And by the way, Qi Xi Jie is also called the Chinese Valentine's day. I'm not sure if girls can give chocolates to the guys they like on this day...

Anyway, I've first read Zhi Nu and Niu Lang's story in Wikipedia. And there's a lot of version to it.

"A young cowherd named Niulang (Chinese: 牛郎; pinyin: niú láng; literally "[the] cowherd"), came across seven fairy sisters bathing in a lake. Encouraged by his mischievous companion the ox, he steals their clothes and waits to see what will happen. The fairy sisters elect the youngest and most beautiful sister Zhinü (simplified Chinese: 织女; traditional Chinese: 織女; pinyin: zhī nǚ; literally "[the] weaver girl", who represents the star Vega) to retrieve their clothing. She agrees to do so, but since Niulang has seen her naked, she must agree to his request for marriage. She proves to be a wonderful wife, and Niulang to be a good husband. They lived happily and had two children. But the Goddess of Heaven (in some versions Zhinü's mother) finds out that Zhinü, a fairy girl, has married a mere mortal human. She is furious and orders her to return to Heaven. (In another version, the Goddess forced the weaver fairy back to her former duty of weaving colorful clouds in the sky because she could not do her job while married to Niulang, a mortal.) Down on Earth, Niulang is very upset that his wife is gone. Suddenly, his cow begins to talk, telling him that if he kills him and puts on his hide, he will be able to go up to Heaven to find his wife. Crying bitterly, he killed the cow, put on the skin. Carrying his two children with him, he went off to Heaven to find Zhinü. The Goddess found out that he had come and was very angry. Taking out her hairpin, the Goddess scratched a wide river in the sky to separate the two lovers forever (thus forming the Milky Way, which separates Altair and Vega).

Zhinü must sit forever on one side of the river, sadly weaving on her loom, while Niulang watches her from afar and takes care of their two children (his flanking stars β and γ Aquilae or by their Chinese names Hè Gu 1 and Hè Gu 3).

But once a year all the magpies in the world would take pity on them and fly up into heaven to form a bridge (鵲橋, "the bridge of magpies", Que Qiao) over the star Deneb in the Cygnus constellation so the lovers may be together for a single night, which is the seventh night of the seventh moon.

It is said that if it rains on the night of Qi Xi, it is the tears of Niulang and Zhinü crying at the misery of their life because the magpies will not come on a night that rains."

Another story tells the following:

Long time ago, there was a poor cowherd, Niulang. His parents died and he lived with his elder brother and sister-in-law, who were both mean and treat Niulang badly. They kicked Niulang out of the house and left him old clothes and an old ox.

Niulang built a cottage at the foot of mountain and took good care of that old ox. One day the ox spoke to him and told that it used to be Taurus, a proud star in the night sky but was published due to his violation to law of the Heavenly Palace. The old ox told Niulang some goodness would come to the pond not far away from his cottage for having a bathe; Zhinu was among them, who is daughter of king in Heaven, the kind and the most beautiful; If he could take her clothes away, she would left and become his wife.

Niulang and Zhinu, the Double Severth Festival

Niulang listened to the old ox, and went to the pond at appointed day. When the goddness came and took off their silk ropes then jumped into the water. Niulang found Zhinu's clothes and hide away. Other goddesses witnessed Niulang and dressed up quickly and flew away, only Zhinu left. He had adored her from the first moment he saw her. They looked into each other's eyes. The heavenly girl told the poor cowherd that she would be his wife.

The soon got married lived together in that cottage. Niulang worked hard to grow crops and Zhinv raised silkworms. They lived a simple but happy life, with a little boy and girl Zhinu give birth afterwards.

One day the old ox died and they preserve the its hide according to its words left. At the same time, the king and queen of the heaven found that Zhinu married a man and had babies. The queen flew down to earth with her solders and caught Zhinu away. Niulang came back home and found Zhinu not at home, only the children left. The babies cried and told him where Zhinu was going. Niulang remembered what the old ox told him and placed the twins in wicker baskets on a pole to carry on his shoulder, put on the magic hide, and flew up, up into the sky. The queen noticed that Niulang was following them, she became angry, with wave of her arm, and a raging torrent immediately appeared between her group and Niulang. He could not get past this wide swollen river. Heartbroken, Niulang and his children could only look and weep bitterly. The King in his Heavenly Palace was moved by the sound of their crying, and decided to allow Niulang and Zhinu to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

This sad love story was passed down from ancient times, with little magpies were seen on double seventh day, as most of them fly to Milky River to form a bridge for the annual meeting of Niulang and Zhinu.

In ancient times, the double seventh day was an important festival for young women and young girls. No matter poor or rich, they would put on their best clothes and place an incense burner in the courtyard and lay out some fruit as offerings. Then all the girls in the family would kowtow to Niulang and Zhinu and pray for ingenuity.

Anyway, whatever the story is, maybe by now, Zhi Nu and Niu Lang must have already met. Maybe they have crossed that bridge that the fairies or the magpies have created for them to be together for a short time. At least on this day, this star-crossed lover would find their happiness even for just one day. Theirs was a sad story, not to tragic as Romeo and Juliet or as Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai. Nothing can be more sadder than knowin that you love each other, that you know in your heart that the two of you are meant to be, but circumstances and situations won't let you be together. Maybe one day, Zhi Nu and Niu Lang will be together, when the Jade Emperor realizes that their love is stronger than anyone else.

As my favorite tagalog quote goes, "Darating ang araw na magkakasama sila ulit, pag tama na ang mali at pwede na ang hindi."

I wish I could find my Niu Lang as well... well I just hope mine would have a happy ending... but anyways, there won't be happy ending if there won't be sad parts, right?

the last day

Today is my last day here in NCO.  I sure am going to miss my colleagues her. I'm going to miss the whole chat and e-mail team, as well as the Amoretto pips, and of course, the remaining Irish team consisting of RTA Joseph, TM Debbie and Jazzie the trainer.

I'm so thankful that TM Roxy gave me the chance to join the chat team. I'm also thankful to TM Lei for encouraging me to do my best, and also I'm going to miss TM Ingrid and her kakulitan, and of course the ever workaholic TM Ida (*peace to the L2s*) :) I will sure miss the times that I'm so "ngarag" because of queuing, the flat screen computer, the pizza, the coaching sessions with Pawie and Sheryl, the bonding moments that the chat team does especially when it's avail. I am not going to miss the CAP downtime and the oh-so ever slow computers.

Thank you guys for welcoming me with arms wide open when I first joined the chat team. I will miss you all. Thanks to all the L2s for accepting the sessions I transfer even though we both know it should be resolved at my end. Thanks to all the tenured L1s for answering all my questions. Kiss, I will miss your kakulitan as well. Genghis, I will miss the time that we are the only chat agents from afternoon till 8 PM (one-man L1 and L2 chat team, remember?). Mommy Cess and Suzie, I will miss being your seatmate and catching up with you every afternoons. Mel and B3, I will miss our queuing moments. Ron boy and Katie, I will miss sharing my food with you. Jeff and Ron girl, I will miss making kulit to you (and yeah, Jeff, please take care of Ah Zun and don't ever tell OM JC that!), and of course I will miss Jorge James Pumaran.  Ariane, I will miss you. Cathy, Menchie, Maco, Aimee, Tim, Vinia, I will miss you guys as well. James, Patrick and Lucas, you were a great team mates. To the other agents that I haven't mentioned, thank you. Sensya na, di man lang tayo nakapagbonding lahat hehehe. I wish I could've gotten to know you all guys better. *sniff* *sniff*

And also to my wavemates... I'm sure going to miss the spam hehehehe. Thanks for being there for me.

Thank you for contacting MSN Technical Support. Have a nice day!

insomiac

i'm slacking off today, although i know today is a blackout day and i have tons of work to do. today is supposed to be my 1st day of work, but i still didn't have any sleep since i woke up at 3 pm yesterday. i don' know why... but i'll be absent simply because if i go to work today, it means i need to be awake for another 12 hours or so. i don't want to fall asleep during my shift or i'll get a CA... so better choose the lesser evil (which will only make me incur 2 attendance points... bye bye complimentary leave!) i know i still have 9 days to live, but why risk it... right?

In search of a unique love story

Since the time I learned about the joy and pain of falling in love, I have been searching for a unique love story. I want it to be really tragic, something that's different (so meaning to say, the love stories that we have watched in "Teleseryes" are excluded), something that could touch one's soul, something that would make me want to relive the story over and over again, something that would give me a good cry (I badly needed it).

I've been telling this to my college bud, Ayanne. We're both suckers for tragic love stories, you know. She told me that the most unique love story would be your own love story. Come to think of it, I haven't heard anyone having this story yet: a girl, her best friend, a guy. The girl, madly in love with the guy, the guy courted the best friend, the best friend didn't like the guy, the girl still holding on for oh-so-how-many-years, hoping the guy would finally see her worth and love her for who she is, the several years later, the girl found out that that guy she's madly in love with is a gay. Yep. A gay. Have you heard of that story yet? Did it already became a plot of a soap opera? Nope. Not yet. It's very unique. And I'm not telling whose love story this is!

Maybe I have my own fair share of a unique stories - may it be from my mom and dad's love story, to my best-friend-forever's love story (I'm a fan), my lil sis's love story, my high school friends' love story, some random people's love story. There might be similarities with their stories, but the fact remains that it's still unique. Maybe because of the character, the circumstances, the setting, the background, the theme song (blech!), the era... but it's unique simply because... there might be two lovers who share the same story, but it will be one in a million, right?

I've heard countless of tragic love stories, and also made up one:

  • From the guy who gave his eyes to the girl he loves
  • the best friend who never told her/his friend about his feeling and acted as the bridge to the obejct of his/her bestfriend's affection
  • the girl who secretly watches over the guy she loves
  • the girl who left the guy because she's dying
  • the guy who dies for the girl she loves
  • etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Most of these stories made me cry, leaving me wondering, why can't they just tell each how they feel? Why does the character have to die? Why does she have to let him go? Why, oh why?! Blame that reaction for someone who have watched too much teen flick during her childhood, who started to believe that everyone will have a happy ending. Come to think of it... Semisonic said before that "Every new beginning come from some other beginnings end". So if it's a happy ending, then a new chapter will open... right? (too much logic, I guess...) OK, what I'm trying to say is that if something else will happen, then it's not yet a happy ending right? So, me thinks, what's the use of happy endings? (OK, now I'm pondering too much on this...)

That's the reason why I prefer tragic stories that those mushy love stories. Because who knows, in the next chapter, something great will happen. The lead may not end up with the guy/girl she loves, but she will eventually end up with someone that will truly make her/him happy. They may not end up together at this moment, but who knows what the future will bring to them. There's always hope of something great will happen. Yep, even the hope of having a happy ending. As Pacey (from Dawson's Creek) said, "If two people are meant to be together, it doesn't mean that they have to be together now." And if there is such a thing called fate, one day, fate will play a trick on them so that they could be happy for the rest of their lives... (now it's getting too mushy... and I hate it...)

Well, I'm still in search of a unique love story. I don't know how it will go, how it will it end, and who will the be the lead characters. I'm not sure how the plot goes, but I know, I want it to be something that I will play in my mind over and over again. (Note: Read between the lines. My subconscious mind is trying to say something...)

Smiling for no particular reason

OK... I admit... I've never been this way since... since... uhhh... high school? college? Geez, today I am smiling for no particular reason... Maybe it's because of a message I've received, or because of my TM's b-day, or maybe... arrgghhh!!! sometimes I hate the feeling of a giddy school girl. Makes me want to puke... but then again I'm smiling. A certain someone just made me smile hehehehe Tongue out Guess I'll be smiling all through out my shift... I hope my colleagues won't think I'm a psycho or something...

It's a buggy bug bug

A lot of things have been bugging me lately, and I guess the best way for me to let it out is to write it here.
Bug no. 1 - Japanese Lessons
Why is this thing buggin me? I'm not quite sure if it's OK with my lil sis to move our tutorials on Saturdays since I have to work on Sundays. Sensei Iris said that it would be better ifI ask Maya to do it every Saturdays instead. Anyway, it will really be lonely if I'm the only student she'll be teaching. I'm sure gonna miss the Sundays I spent with them - coffee at CBTL, dinner at Gateway, and Timezone. Geez, just thinking of timezone makes me want to hit the drums again and beat the UFO machine... hehehehe
Anyway, on our next meeting, we're supposed to have our test for Level 1. Two weeks has passed, and I haven't reviewed yet! How the hell am I gonna pass that exam? Crying I guess I need to study all day this Friday for the exams. (and I fervently hope and pray that RTA would make Sunday my rest day... hehehehe)
Bug no. 2 - Taekwondo
I want to take Taekwondo lessons!!! Gee, since I watched Hana Kimi (wherein Rui Xi took Taekwondo lessons), I've been considrering taking Taekwondo instead of hitting the gym. Hmmm... not a bad idea Light bulb! Just imagine, me, kicking butts! Ha! I just hope I'll lose weight when I take Taekwondo. Can't wait... but I still need to find a school witha very reasonable price...
Bug no. 3 - Pie
Why is this girl bugging my mind? It just so happen that I wasn't able to spend as much time as I could with her. There used to be a time where I would see her everyday. That's when we're still in college, since our schools, Mapua and Letran, are just neighbors. I always go to their place in San Juan whenever I could. But since she already lives with her hubby and since she already have work, we don't get to see each other that much. It didn't occur to me that one day, I'll be missing her "pangungulit" over the phone, or her complaint about life and her hubby. That's why whenever she calls me, I make sure we talk a long time just to make uyp for it. OK, so I just saw her a few weeks ago, but for best friends, it's uncalled for. I 'm happy that she enjoys what she's doing right and she gained back her confidence after what happened to her.
Bug no. 4 - My Pad
I want to paint my room violet. A very dark violet, as if someone threw grapes inside my room. I want to buy a couch for my room, and I want to redecorate it...
Bug no. 5 - Homecoming and the confrontation
I don't want to face him. I don't want to hear him ask what's my plan, because the truth is, I don't know... Yes, he's a father figure to me, and he only wants the best for his niece. But, I don't want to be pressured right now. The last thing I need is someone telling me to get that stupid, damn diploma. I have been talking about my mom about it, and I told her that my work schedule might not allow me to go back to school since the journey to Mapua would take 48 lightyears if I ride a jeepney. And if I have to go back to school, I have to let go of my job. Gees, just when I'm starting to enjoy it again...
I guess he will never understand, since his two kids already graduated from college without having to work on their own. I'm not like them, and will never be. I know I'm just average, and besides, my heart does not belong in engineering anymore. If I will go back to school, I will choose another course that I will enjoy, not something that will just please them...

cousins

I'm not close to any of my cousins... Well... I used to be close to my cousin but since they started high school, I felt left out. Gone are the days that I would go out and play with them and their friends from their neighborhood, but I'm doubtful with their action since they seemed to be annoyed when I'm around since I'm very "makulit". Seems like they have no choice but to bring me along with them since I'm staying at their place.

The last time I played with my cousins was when I was in second grade. Unfortunately, I skinned my elbow, which made my uber over protective grandma to bring me home and lock me up. Goodbye... happy days. Since then, whenever I sleep over at their place, I am not allowed to go out.

I became a teenager, but still, I never go to be close to them. I'm blaming our age gap, but I guess, that's life. That's why I devoted my time to my high school BFFs rather than hanging out with my cousins. Family problems came, making me more distant to them. I find myself comparing myself to them - who got the better grades, the better school, the better mind, who's the better daughter, etc. Whenever I'm around them, it felt awkward, simply because I'm hanging out with people I really don't know.

This November, my uncle will go home from the states, bringing with them one of my cousins, who I've never met nor seen in my entire life. Somehow, it scares me. I don't how to act and react in front of her. I don't want to be compared to her or even be envy of her. I just don't know how to treat her. Should I treat her like one of my best friends, or just treat her the way I treat my cousins? We exchanged e-mails once, but that's it. And it took her a long time to write me... like a year...

Guess, I'll blame it on the age gap again...

Me and My Wild Imagination - Part 3

It's hard being a hopeless romantic. Sometimes, I wish I could also find my prince charming, just like the those heroines in the drama seroes that I have watched. I'm not expecting someone as cute a Wu Zun , or someone as handsome as Ming Dao , or someone who has a good singing voice like Alan Luo.

I just want someone who could protect me like Yi Quan did to Rui Xi,although I know I could care for and protect myself, but I just needed someone who would be strong for me when I am weak...

note from my alter-ego: bat ang dami namang clips from Hana Kimi? Napaghahalata...

someone who would encourage me and make me smile like Qin Lang would to Xin Lei,I'm not that brave to face the challenges that would come my way, and it would be great to hear words of encouragement from someone who cares a lot for me, and it would also be great to see the effort of that person to make me smile even though heaven and hell have already cursed me...

note from my alter-ego: buong episode 2?

and someone who would defend me, just like Ah Jiang whenever Xia Tian's in trouble. I'm someone who always gets into mess, I just want someone who would be there for me when my I ran out of luck and I couldn't fix the mess that I have caused.

note from my alter-ego: walang mahanap na clip ng episodes ng Ying Ye 3 Jia 1 no?

Maybe, these things are already too much to ask. See? That's why I have love stories sometimes. It makes me want to wish for something that I know I couldn't have.

Goodbye, Wakefield Twins... Goodbye Childhood Memories... Goodbye, Past...

Since Grade School, I have always been a fan of Sweet Valley. I remember eating my lunch as I could so that I could go to the library and read the misadventures of Jessica and Elizabeth. I would save money to get the latest copy of their book, or badger my mom to buy 3 books for me. Whenever I read their stories, I felt like I'm part of it. Sometimes, I wish that I could be one of the twins, either Jessica or Elizabeth. I grew up with them. I share their experience. I learned more about teenage life because of the twins and their friends.

When the publishers of Sweet Valley High came up with the secret diaries or Jessica and Elizabeth, I remember buying all the three parts of Jessica and Elizabeth's secret diaries. It's because not all of the copies of Sweet Valley High could be found on the Grade School Library, and there was no copy at all at the Day High School Library. I assume that the College Library and the Graduate Studies Library have a copy of it. I also enjoyed reading the Saga series, which tells the story of Sweet Valley and the families who lived there. Too bad, I was only able to read the Patman Saga and the Wakefield Saga. I was not able to buy the Fowler Saga since I didn't have money that time, and I was not able to find a copy of the other Wakefield Saga. I tried to complete the Sweet Valley University series and the Sweet Valley Senior High series, but I wasn't able to do so. I proudly display my Sweet Valley collection on our bookshelf. I have always thought that my collection was priceless.

I use to read the books while waiting for the school bus to leave the school premises, when I'm bored, when I'm waiting for my lil sis, when I needed to do a book report or book review in our English class. I used to share opinions about a certain copy of Sweet Valley to my fellow classmates, who are as addicted as I am. I borrow books from my classmates whenever they got a new copy of SVH. I even watched the TV Series, but it didn't impress me much since the story line is different from what I have read in SVH.

What I didn't liked about SVH, is that the timeline and the plots are quite... uhmmm.... impossible and unrealistic. Who, tell me, who in their right mind would stay in Junior High for more than 10 years? How can all the stories happen when there are only 12 months a years, and 10 months in a school year? It's a little bit weird that I was reading about Jessica and Elizabeth, who are in their junior year, when I was in Grade 5, and yet, I'm still reading about Jessica and Elizabeth who are still in their junior year when I'm already about to start my senior year! Weird! I can't believe a lot of things happen to them during their junior year, and yet, only a few interesting and exciting things happened to me when I was in third year high. I was glad that after the traumatic earthquake that hit Sweet Valley, Jessica, Elizabeth and the gang were able to move to another level. I only got to read the first series of SVH Senior High, since I felt that reading these books is a bit to childish. Right after I graduated from High School, and before I start college, I decided to clear my bookshelf and keep the Sweet Valley books in our "bodega".

Last Wednesday, I found out that most of my Sweet Valley books, together with the other novels and books that I have bought way back in high school, were eaten by termites. The only thing left are small pages and cover, and somewhat unreadable pages. My precious Sweet Valley series collection is gone. For a while, I wanted to cry. I was saving those books for my little Chloe Reese, or for my cousin. Too bad... together with Sweet Valley, a bigger part of me was also eaten by termites - my childhood memories, my past, and my dreams. It was because of Sweet Valley that I desired to be a novelist. I remember before, I tried to write a series of stories just like Sweet Valley, but I was to lazy to finish it. But I guess, it's better that way. I stashed SVH before, hoping that I could finally move on and grow up, but then those books are the only links I have with my past...

That reminds me... I remember I put a love letter between the pages of one of my books... I hope that letter's got eaten by the termites too!

what a life...

Barkada Moments Part 4 - Death

Saturday.

It was supposed to be an ordinary day. For the past days, I haven't seen Coco online. All the while, I thought she was just busy preparing her papers for Affinity. Just then, around 5 in the afternoon, she signed in to her IM.

The first thing that she told me, is that her 97-year old grandma dies in her sleep last week monday. (Correct me please...) she was the lola who lovingly greets us when we hang out at Coco's house when they still lived in Sikatuna Village. She was like a lola to all of us.

I was surprised with what happened. I immediately texted Pie, informing her that about what happened, and to my surprise, she ALREADY knew about Coco's grandma's death. I was the last one to know. Nobody EVER informed me about that.

Her lola was cremated last Saturday. She died last Monday. If I have known, I could've come to her lola's wake last Tuesday, but as I mentioned above, I was the last one to know! I felt really guilty with that. Coco was there when my grandma died 7 years ago. I wanted to console her, but since it was too late, I just gave my condolences through IM.

I felt a little furious... why didn't my friends told me about it? I confronted Pie about it (although I really have no plan of talking to her) last Sunday, and asked her why she didn't tell me about it. She explained that she heard about it from Chris (our "so-called" tropa), she got a text message from her, thinking it was sent to all because of the word "Guys" on her message. Fine... Chris knows my number, but why didn't she even bothered to send me that message? I was mad because I wasn't there for Coco, and I was mad because I found out too late? Nobody bothered to tell me that! Sheesh!

A confirmed Hana Kimi news...

Kapalit daw ng "Something about 1%" sa channel 2? ok lang kasi mapapanood ko siya tuwing sundays... pero on second thought, I'd rather not watch it sa 2. I'd rather wait for the part 2 on CTS, i'd rather watch it on Curnchy roll, baka kasi mawala yung OST nya di ba?
